Political parties to be given a stylish makeover

So there's been arguments that young people are not so interested in wearing the uniforms of their political parties. Some women have gone further in giving medical 'prognoses' to the political health malfunction, as being due to the fact that the uniforms are dull, not stylish nor in tune with modern fashion. With the advent of these complains, in efforts to get more youths involved in promoting political parties, fashion designer and stylist Katlego Molomo has been consulted for adequate prescription in tackling the issue. Molomo had a few interesting suggestions. See details after the cut...

We love our political parties. Their eccentric leaders, extravagant rallies, picketing and back-handed banter in parliament definitely keep things interesting.

But have you ever thought of becoming an active member of a particular party and proudly wear their uniform?
Recently, a few young women caused quite a controversy when they pegged the ANC Women's League party uniform as dull and unattractive for the youth to wear.
This, they say, makes it unattractive for young people to consider joining the league.
The leaders of the league have taken the criticism to heart as they announced they would look into revamping the uniform many people have compared to old-school stokvel gear or church uniforms.
With the help of fashion designer and stylist Katlego Molomo, we take a look at the party uniforms of the EFF, the DA and ask what could they do to make their uniforms more attractive to fashion-forward youth?
THE DA
With the young, cool, calm and collected Mmusi Maimane at the helm, one would think the DA's party uniform would be appealing to the youth.
Their bright blue T-shirts, though, do not scream fashion forward.
The DA's national spokesperson Phumzile van Damme, however, says the DA's uniform is anything but dull. "We are a party that is diverse, colourful and vibrant...
"We are a young and growing party and it shows in the way we dress. We are definitely not dull at all," she says.
Molomo says he would make a few tweaks to the DA's uniform.
"I would go for blue high and low blazers that are tailored and would look good on both a man and a woman.
"I would also add blue pencil skirts and high-waisted pants for that feminine touch. Black formal shoes and a plain white shirt would look so classy with the blue blazer."
According to Molomo, the DA must lose the round-neck blue T-shirts.
"Golf shirts work so much better and are more appealing to the youth. Round-neck T-shirts mostly end up being used as sleepwear. They are too frumpy."
EFF
The EFF are known for their red berets and overalls. EFF members also sport caps, T-shirts and jackets. "The EFF has young and vibrant representatives, and I would like to see their uniform reflect that.
"While men decided to rock their overalls, I would work on the looks of the women, which is where I feel like they fall short. I would put them [women] in red captain hats, with red jumpsuits that are a bit more figure-hugging than the men's overalls to make the distinction between the sexes.
"I would pair the jumpsuits with black heels so they can look presentable."
Since the berets gives the fighters a military look, Molomo says their T-shirts can be paired with black boots and jeans to enhance the military look, and the modern take does not look like they are going to war.
The EFF spokesperson was unavailable for comment.
THE ANC
Probably the governing party that has the most branded items of clothing, the ANC boasts jackets, T-shirts, shoes, bags, caps and hats. You name it, they have it.
But what about the Women's League uniform that was pegged as dull?
"Don't get me wrong, that uniform has such a powerful stance - a lot of history behind it - but perhaps to attract a more youthful market.
"I would put them in green double-breasted blazers, with green and black horizontal stripes," Molomo says.
"This would match the black skirts perfectly. I would insist on a tight-fitting pencil skirt, paired with black heels. For that last touch, I would add a black Fedora.
"For me the Women's League represents power and I think this change would fit that stance perfectly."
