‘Killer Cop ‘ arrested after months on the run

A police detective from Pinetown who was on the run after being implicated in the murder of a Durban businesswoman has been arrested after more than four months at large.

According to two police sources, the officer was traced to the Eastern Cape and arrested in a police swoop on Thursday and was last night, transported back to KwaZulu-Natal where he would appear in court.More after the cut...

The Provincial Task Team threw out a wide dragnet for the officer, who found himself on the other side of the law.
The policeman cannot be named until he appears in court.
He is wanted for his alleged role in the murder of Nalini Naidoo, who was found dead with her throat cut near the Shongweni Dam at Nkwalini last October.

The pursuit of the officer was the latest instalment in a dramatic tale of murder.
Naidu’s husband Seelan, himself a former policeman, appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court in June, accused of planning his wife’s murder.
He had handed himself over to the investigations team and is being held at the Durban North Police Station.

Three people were arrested and charged for murder and kidnapping in the weeks following the discovery of her body.
Gcina Magwaza, 39, Zwelakhe Maphumulo, 41, and Kholekile Sithole, 41, were each convicted and sentenced to 45 years for murder and kidnapping.

The detective is understood to have organised the band of hitmen.
Seelan Naidu had in the past been found guilty of trying to have his wife killed.
She had reportedly forgiven him and testified on his behalf, which led to him receiving correctional supervision and a four-year suspended sentence for her attempted murder in 2006.
In that attack she was shot four to five times while dropping off her youngest son at school.
Police spokespeople were not immediately available for comment.
